Ronaldo Quits Portugal Camp, Vows to Reveal 'The Truth' Soon.

Cristiano Ronaldo has walked out of Portugal's national team camp in Copenhagen, just a day before their Nations League clash against Denmark. The captain confirmed his exit on social media, saying the decision followed coach Jorge Jesus's press conference and a conversation with Portuguese FA president Pedro Proença; and promised to reveal "the truth" behind his departure in due time.

Cristiano Ronaldo Walks Out of Portugal Camp After Jorge Jesus Confirms He Won't Start vs Denmark

Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal's national team camp in Copenhagen, just a day before their UEFA Nations League clash with Denmark on Thursday, October 1.

The 41-year-old's exit came shortly after head coach Jorge Jesus addressed the media in his pre-match press conference, where he confirmed Ronaldo would not start against Denmark, having already been left out of the starting line-up and remained an unused substitute in Portugal's 2-1 win over Norway on Sunday.

What Jorge Jesus Said

Jesus insisted there was no rift between him and his captain, but was direct about his decision: "I can promise what I want. I am the coach. I told the player that he will not start the match, and he will be on the bench. If I need him for 30 minutes he will play, and if I do not need him he will not play."

He added that "the rules are the same for everyone" and confirmed Gonçalo Ramos, who scored the winner against Norway, would start up front against Denmark "if everything goes according to plan."

Jesus also addressed reports that Ronaldo had refused to train earlier in the week, dismissing them: "They forced me to talk to him about an issue that wasn't even an issue. There was nothing to talk about. He never refused anything," he said, explaining Ronaldo had instead done individual mobility and strengthening work.

Ronaldo Accepted the Coach's Decision — But Still Left

According to reports, Jesus said every player knows the coach makes the final call, and that Ronaldo himself told him he would abide by whatever decision he made regarding selection — whether that meant starting, coming off the bench, or not playing at all.

Despite that, shortly after the press conference and following a conversation with Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença, Ronaldo announced his exit on social media: "After the National Team coach's press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the National Team training camp. In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself."

He closed his statement by wishing Portugal and his teammates well ahead of the Denmark match.

Background

Jesus acknowledged that he had initially told Ronaldo he would likely feature against Norway, before changing his mind due to the circumstances of the match — and admitted "any player" would be disappointed by that. He did not apologize for the shift, however, maintaining, "I can promise whatever I want, I'm the coach."

Portuguese outlet A Bola also reported that Ronaldo left Parken Stadium on Wednesday in a car belonging to the Portuguese Football Federation, just as his teammates began training on the pitch — despite Jesus having said minutes earlier that Ronaldo would train as normal.
