The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, is expected to appear before a court in the Netherlands within the next 48 hours after his arrest at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam.
The MP was arrested on Sunday, May 8, over alleged money laundering and romance scam-related offences.
Sources close to his legal team say he is expected to challenge the legality of both his arrest and detention during his court appearance.
His arrest was first confirmed in a statement issued by the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, who noted that Parliament had been officially informed and is working closely with Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather more details.
The statement further revealed that the Speaker of Parliament and parliamentary leadership remain in contact with the mission to understand the full circumstances surrounding the detention of the Independent MP for Asante Akyem North.
Meanwhile, Majority Chief Whip Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor has assured the public that the lawmaker is safe, stable, and unharmed while in detention.
